如何用英文地道描述「時間」？10年原來是...

「時間」是生活中很常接觸到的話題，但要怎麼描述幾點才地道？「全年無休」怎麼講？常用的 second、day、century 等等又有甚麼片語和用法？

• Time/時間

Do you have the time？ = What time is it？/現在幾點？

要注意 Do you have the time 是詢問他人現在幾點，問對方有沒有空的用法是 Do you have time？

描述時間

除了說 It’s eight o’clock.或 It’s six fifty.，還有甚麼用法呢？

• sharp /幾點整

The prom will start at eight o’clock sharp.
舞會將在8點整開始。

• past / 描述整點之後半小時內的時間

It’s five past ten. = It’s 10：05.

• to /描述整點之前半小時內的時間

It’s ten to twelve. = It’s 11：50.

• half / quarter

half 是一半，quarter 是四分之一，在時間上分別是半小時和15分鐘。

It’s half past four. = It’s 4：30.

It’s quarter to two. = It’s 1：45.
take one’s time 悠哉的，不急忙的

• all time 有史以來

I think The Beatles is the greatest band of all time.
我認為披頭四是有史以來最偉大的樂團。

• second 秒

英文中常用 second 誇飾很短的時間。

The tourists bought everything they saw without a second's hesitation in the souvenir store.
遊客毫不遲疑的搶購紀念品商店中的東西。

I’ll be there in a second.
我馬上就到了。

• minute 分鐘

和 second 一樣也能夠誇飾非常短的時間。

Can I come in for a minute？
我可以進去一下嗎？

minute 當形容詞的意思是「非常微小的」

The equipment is able to detect the minutest errors.
這個設備可以偵測到最微小的失誤。

minutes （複數型）則有「會議記錄」的意思。

The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting carefully to report to the CEO.
秘書仔細的向執行長報告上次開會的會議紀錄。

• day /日

「day by day」 vs.「 day after day」

「day by day 」有逐日、漸漸的意涵，「day after day」 則是沒有改變、日復一日的意思。

Connor is getting better day by day.
Connor 正在一天一天的康復。

Aaron is tired of doing the same work day after day.
Aaron 對日復一日做相同工作感到厭煩。

• 24/7/ 全年無休

24 hours a day， 7 days a week，指除了國定假日外全年無休營業，讀做 twenty-four-seven.

• week /星期

week in， week out，意思是每星期都一樣，沒有例外。

Grayson is taking tennis lesson every Thursday， week in， week out.
Grayson 每周四都會上網球課，沒有一週例外。

• year/ 年

put years on / take years on someone 使某人看起來變老/變年輕

The pressure of moneymaking can put years on a person.
賺錢的壓力會讓人看起來變老許多。

• decade /十年

Professor Lin has taught at this university for nearly a decade.
林教授在這所大學教了將近10年的書。

• century /一世紀；一百年

This magnificent building was built in the 15th Century and survived several wars and natural disasters
這座宏偉的建築在15世紀完工，並從數場戰爭和天災中倖存下來。

It took more than a century to complete the cathedral.
這座大教堂花了超過100年才完工。
